Detroit has some of the worst paved roads in the western world (only a slight exaggeration!) and yet the locals are constantly joking that the local trademark symbol of the city, in fact the whole state of Michigan, is the orange construction barrel.

Local Public Transit
Don't plan any trips around town with local buses. They are notoriously unreliable and certainly won't get you from the airport to downtown like in any other city in the world of a similar size and fame. But for the record, the official Metro Detroit SMART (sic) bus sytem website is Here

Shopping: NOt downtown you don't. Not a lot anyway. Things have looked up in the last year or 2 with some new stores moving into the new Compucenter building near Campus Marshus.

Casinos? There's three in the downtown area- MGM Grand, Greektown Casino and MotorCity Casino and, across the Detroit River in Windsor, Ontario, Canada the much more relaxed Casino Windsor.
